Partial loss of page view data during January 2022

Problem

Customers have reported a loss of page views attributed to particular Confluence pages and spaces up during January 2022.

  • In the Google Analytics reporting screens within Confluence, this will cause incorrect, or no data to be displayed during this period.

  • In the Google Analytics interface, it will cause Confluence content (pages/blogs) page views to incorrectly have the title “(not set)” and be missing some custom dimensions (such as Content ID).

Cause

This was caused by a change made by Atlassian to their Confluence APIs to help with migration of Server and Data Center instances to Confluence Cloud.

Atlassian changed the type of the contentId in one of their APIs from a number to a string. This change affected the variable type checking within our app, and so the Google Analytics tracking data is being sent incorrectly.

More details of the change can be found here:

https://community.developer.atlassian.com/t/change-notice-connect-contentid-value-returned-by-ap-navigator-getlocation-value-changing-from-number-to-string/54105

Customers so far have suggested that the timeframe where data was incorrectly collected was between Jan 21, 2022 and Jan 27, 2022, but Atlassian state that they began a gradual rollout as early as Jan 10, 2022.

Fix

On Jan 27, 2022 at 12:00 UTC+0, we deployed an update to our app which corrects this loss of data.

We apologise for the incorrect reporting during this period and ask that any questions or comments be sent to support@dsapps.dev.
